Kirk Withrow’s Art

Kirk’s artwork spans multiple mediums and genres. He frequently draws from his experiences in science and medicine as inspiration for his pieces. You’ll find medical maladies transformed into works of art, alongside dark portraits of familiar objects. Much of Kirk’s work reflects the same dark realism you’ll find in his writing.

Malady Series

Malady is a series of block prints that depicts some of the pathology that can afflict human beings. They are depictions of patients whom I’ve had the honor of meeting and caring for over the years. The prints were made circa 2011. I may someday add to the collection which currently contains 21 different block prints.

Songscape Series

I enjoy old-time and folk music, and as a banjo player I have learned a great many songs that tell remarkable stories. The lyrics of these songs generally read like a book synopsis.  There’s usually a protagonist, a conflict, and a resolution—and so much going on in between. The songs often describe the scenario in such detail that you can ‘see’ the events unfolding.  They practically beg for a visual translation.

I will almost certainly add to this collection in time. It currently contains Pretty Polly, Omie Wise, John Hardy, John Henry, Little Black Train, and Stack O’ Lee to name a few.
